Inclusive communications and cultural intelligence

Understanding and respecting others’ cultural backgrounds, values, and norms is more important than ever in today’s increasingly diverse and interconnected world. Cultural intelligence (CQ) is a crucial skill that helps individuals and organizations interact and communicate effectively with people from different cultures. By leveraging cultural intelligence, we can create more inclusive communications that promote mutual understanding, respect, and trust.

Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively in various cultural contexts. It is based on 4 skills – drive, knowledge, strategy, and action – that anyone can improve and rely upon to help create more inclusive communications. The more visible aspect of cultural intelligence resides in its 4th
skill: CQ action, which refers to an individual’s ability to adapt to a culturally different environment. Here are a few CQ action techniques:

3 CQ action techniques to communicate more inclusively:

1. Use “code-switching”

Code-switching involves adjusting one’s language and communication style to match the cultural context. For example, when communicating with someone from a different culture, we might adapt our vocabulary, grammar, and tone to be more appropriate and respectful.

2. Use visual aids and non-verbal communication

Use visual aids and nonverbal communication to enhance understanding. For example, pictures or diagrams can help convey complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand, regardless of language or cultural background. Similarly, gestures and facial expressions can help express emotions and feelings, even when language is a barrier.

3. Adjust your attitude and beliefs

Inclusive communication is not just about what we say or how we say it but also our attitudes and beliefs. To create genuinely inclusive communications, we must cultivate openness, curiosity, and respect toward people from different cultures. We must be willing to listen, learn, adapt to the cultural context and recognize the value of diversity in all its forms.
